I’ve been a lifelong fan of William Shakespeare, and several years ago, felt a pull to dive back into his plays. Those bawdy, hilarious, and poignant comedies, as well as the bone chilling, insightful, and devastating tragedies helped me through many difficult times in my life. Theater, like fiction, is a mirror by which we can safely examine and understand our own lives through the characters’ journeys.
And the wisdom of Shakespeare’s plays is arguably more relevant today than it’s ever been.
Just ask Taylor Swift.
At the time Shakespeare wrote (from the late 1500s to the early 1600s), his world consisted of plague, corrupt politicians, conflict, discrimination, religious upheaval, and natural disasters. Despite (or perhaps because of ?) the turmoil, his plays offer us ways to create joy, imagination, compassion, and meaning in our lives.
